Locked Notes Issue

Recently upgraded to an iPhone 7. Now, the notes from my iPhone 6 (which I no longer have access to) are there but the locked notes are requesting a password I never created, instead of touch ID. I checked to make sure Touch ID is set to "on" for notes. Even when creating a new note, when attempting to lock the only option I have is to enter this mysterious password. I've tried my Apple ID password and my phone's passcode. Neither work. I know that I can reset the password but that won't help me access my current notes. Any help out there?

Try accessing your notes from:

https://www.icloud.com

Your Notes password has nothing to do with your Apple ID password or your iPhone's passcode. Learn about Notes password protection here:

Keep your notes secure with password-protection - Apple Support

If you don't know this password, you will not be able to retrieve these notes.

You had to create a password before you could use Touch ID to lock your notes. You will not be able to access your previously locked notes without this password.

You're right. I entered incorrect passwords repeatedly until it gave me a password hint. So, I obviously created one long ago and just didn't remember because from that point on I always used Touch ID. Sorry to waste everyone's time. Thanks for your help!

It must not have been too long ago.

Notes password protection was introduced with iOS 9 in the fall of 2015.
